Duo nab Drama League honors

Kander, Ebb to get prizes at May 11 luncheon

Composer-lyricist team John Kander and Fred Ebb, helmer Michael Mayer and charity org Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS will take home the Drama League’s annual specialty awards, handed out at a luncheon ceremony set for May 11.

Kander and the late Ebb (“Chicago,” “Curtains”) will receive the honor for achievement in musical theater, and Mayer, director of “Spring Awakening” and the upcoming Patty Griffin tuner “10 Million Miles,” will draw the Julia Hansen award for directing. Broadway Cares, the org behind popular Rialto fund-raising events such as “Broadway Bares,” “Broadway Bears” and “Nothin’ Like a Dame,” gets the nod for unique contribution to theater.

At the 73rd annual event, kudos also will be handed out for play, musical and revivals of a play and a musical; the season’s nominees will be announced April 25. In addition, the luncheon, hosted by Gary Beach, will see some 60 thesps invited onto the dais to be honored for performances given over the course of the season.

Drama League, founded in 1916, offers development programs for both creatives and audiences, including the well-known Directors Project for young helmers.
