Laura Osnes and Max Crumm were the viewer faves of "Grease: You're the One That I Want," scoring the lead roles in this summer's Broadway revival of "Grease."
Osnes and Crumm won the most votes on NBC's "American Idol"-style casting show, whose results were announced on air last night. Thesps will play the romantic leads in "Grease," about a good girl and a greaser at a 1950s high school. (Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta played the parts in the popular 1978 film version.)
The two unknown actors have appeared in regional productions of "Grease." Osnes played Sandy in a Minneapolis production, while L.A.-based Crumm has appeared (although not as Danny) in two different stagings of the tuner.
Beginning in January, "You're the One That I Want" created an unprecedented national profile for a Broadway production. Ratings for the series, however, were modest at best, with aud size in recent weeks averaging around 6 million.
"You're the One That I Want" is becoming part of a legit-based reality-TV trend.
Show was inspired by "How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria?," a popular Brit skein that followed casting of a West End revival of "The Sound of Music." A U.K. casting show for an upcoming London revival of "Grease" is also in the works.
Helmed by Kathleen Marshall, who served as a judge on the TV show, "Grease" begins previews July 24 for an Aug. 19 opening at the Brooks Atkinson Theater.
