Kinowelt passes million mark

Channel aims for 2 million subscribers

By ED MEZA

BERLIN -- In a milestone for Germany's crowded TV market, pay TV movie channel Kinowelt TV has signed up one million subscribers in Germany and Switzerland.

While the Cologne-based channel saw subscribers triple last year, it must recruit two million customers to break even.

The web, which focuses on European and world cinema, plus film and DVD news and special reports, plans a video-on-demand offer as well as expansion into Austria.

The broadcaster is developing the VOD service with cable providers, including Kabel Deutschland, Unity Media, Kabel BW, Eutelsat, Arena and HanseNet, which carry the service as part of their digital pay TV packages.

Kinowelt TV gets most of its licenses from Leipzig-based producer-distrib Kinowelt, but also acquires fare from third parties.

The channel recently picked up a children's package from French entertainment group Dargaud that included "Lucky Luke" and the "Tintin" series.
