Stuber/Parent's Mary Parent and Scott Stuber are producing with G-Unit Films' Chris Lighty.Lozano is rewriting the script with Tony Dalton, who has starred in the Lozano-directed "Matando Cabos" and "Sultanes Del Sur," and who co-wrote the former with Lozano and scripted the latter by himself. "Live Bet" was originated by scribes Charley and Vlas Parlapanides.
Heist film script is set in the world of underground clubs and illegal car racing. Original was set in New York; rewrite adds several locations including Las Vegas and Philadelphia. Studio hopes to be in production by late summer.
"We wanted to give the characters more soul," Lozano told Daily Variety. "I didn't want to make a film that just stayed an action film."
Universal also has enlisted Billy and Fernando Rovzar, two of Mexico's up-and-coming producers and the founders of Lemon Films, to exec produce. The producers collaborated with Lozano and Dalton on "Matando Cabos," which became the second-highest grossing film in Mexico in 2004.
"It was important to bring together the whole team," Billy Rovzar said. "It's amazing that a studio like Universal is betting on Mexican talent. We were blown away and flattered, but we know we will deliver."
WMA repped Lozano, Dalton and the Rovzar brothers.
