Shochiku buys 'Vexille' toon rights

Film is Sori's first since 2004's 'Appleseed'

TOKYO -- Shochiku has purchased worldwide rights, including Japan, to Fumihiko Sori's CG feature "Vexille."

Shochiku plans to release the toon, Sori's first since he produced the 2004 sci-fi hit "Appleseed," late this summer through its own theater chain.

"Vexille" depicts a Japan that shuts itself off from the world in 2066 and develops weapons the U.S. considers a threat. A U.S. special forces unit, led by femme commander Vexille, enters Japan undercover to see what's going on.

The $10 million pic will be completed by late spring. Voice cast includes Meisa Kuroki, Yasuko Matsuyuki and Shosuke Tanihara.

"Appleseed," the first full-CG toon made in Japan, was  released theatrically in more than 30 countries; DVD sales amounted to 150,000 units in Japan and 300,000 in the U.S.
