Macht lights on 'Whiteout'

Film based on Rucka's comicbook

Gabriel Macht will star opposite Kate Beckinsale in action-thriller "Whiteout," the first pic from Joel Silver's Warners-based Dark Castle Entertainment banner. Tom Skerritt and Columbus Short also will star.

Warners will distribute domestically and in most territories overseas, under its deal with Dark Castle.

Helmer Dominic Sena is shooting the pic, based on Greg Rucka's comicbook miniseries, in Canada. Scribes Jon and Erich Hoeber adapted for the bigscreen.

Story revolves around a lone U.S. marshal assigned to Antarctica who has three days to solve a murder mystery before the continent's dark winter begins. Macht plays a U.N. operative who is also investigating the murder.

Producers are Silver and Dark Castle's Susan Downey. Rucka, Steve Richards and Don Carmody exec produce.

Macht was last in theaters with Robert De Niro's "The Good Shepherd" and romantic comedy "Because I Said So."

Skerritt's feature credits include "Contact" and "A River Runs Through It."

Short recently starred in "Stomp the Yard" and appears in the upcoming "This Christmas."
