'Death' sets record Japan DVD bow

VAP has shipped 500,000 sets

A total of 1 million DVDs of the two-part fantasy/suspense smash "Death Note" will launch on the Japanese sell-through market on March 14, setting a record for a domestic pic released in 2006.

Video distrib VAP has shipped 500,000 sets containing "Death Note" and the follow-up "Death Note: The Last Name." Released theatrically by Warner in June and November, respectively, the two pics grossed a total of Y8 billion ($67.8 million) with 2.53 million admissions -- more than any Japanese pic in 2006. Both have since been broadcast on the NTV web -- the pic's producer -- garnering high ratings.

"Death Note" appeared in rental shops on February 14, while "Death Note: The Last Name" will follow on March 14.

The sell-through DVD set contains a 150-minute extras disk, a music CD and a 32-page booklet, in addition to the two pic disks, all for $60.50.

Based on a comic that has sold nearly 24 million copies in paperback edition and helmed by Shusuke Kaneko, the two pics tell the story of a mysterious notebook that deals death to anyone whose name is written in its pages. Tatsuya Fujiwara stars as a college student who finds the notebook and begins a reign of terror, Kenichi Matsuyama, as the sweets-loving detective mastermind who tries to stop him.
