Japan nets set ethics crackdown

Policy developed in response to scandals

TOKYO -- Pubcaster NHK and two Japanese broadcasting orgs are cracking down on producers who fake data for shows.

NHK, the National Assn. of Commercial Broadcasters in Japan (NAB) and the Broadcasting & Ethics Program Improvement Organization (BPO) have developed the policy in response to a rash of scandals on network shows, mostly prominently the since-canceled "Aru Aru Daijiten II" (Encyclopedia of Living II) broadcast on Kansai Telecasting (KTV).

By May BPO plans to set up a committee that will establish ethical guidelines for broadcasters, deal with violations and issue recommendations. The members will be scholars, critics and others from outside the broadcasting industry.

The committee will also ask broadcasters to implement their own plans for dealing with ethical violations, while evaluating their effectiveness.

"To secure the trust of viewers, it's important for us to deal strongly with this ourselves," NHK prexy Genichi Hashimoto said on Wednesday.
