Having found success selling the marijuana-themed "Weeds," Showtime is now turning its attention to legal drugs.
Cabler has pacted with Tim Robbins and producer Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas for the pharmaceutical biz-set family drama "Possible Side Effects."
Robbins will write, exec produce and (pending a greenlight) direct a pilot for the one-hour drama.
Goldsmith-Thomas and Daniel Thomas will exec produce.
"Possible Side Effects" will have a two-pronged focus. In addition to exploring the dysfunctional family dynamics of the main characters, potential skein will examine the politics, research, bureaucracy, miraculous cures and greed that accompany the pharmaceutical industry's search for the next billion-dollar drug.
Deal comes as Showtime preps for what promises to be a busy spring. Later this month, net unveils its adaptation of "This American Life," while its pricey period drama "The Tudors" launches in April.
Goldsmith-Thomas, who produced the CBS drama "Queens Supreme" five years ago, recently made a major overall deal with HBO to produce films, series and specials related to the "American Girl" franchise.
"Possible Side Effects" was packaged by CAA.
