McConaughey hits surfer turf

Actor to star in 'Dude'

Matthew McConaughey will spend the summer catching waves in Malibu for "Surfer, Dude."

S.R. Bindler will helm from a script he wrote with Cory Van Dyke.

McConaughey, who has been filming Warner Bros.' "Fool's Gold" in Australia, has been hitting the waves there, getting ready for a role that casts him as a soulful surfer in existential crisis.

Production is slated to begin May 7. McConaughey will produce with his j.k. livin' cohorts Gus Gustawes and Mark Gustawes, as well as Playtone partners Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman. Jeff Sagansky's Winchester Films is financing, and the Weinstein Co. will handle foreign sales.

A domestic distributor won't be secured until after the film is shot.

Dennis Weiss will be exec producer.

Pic is j.k. livin's first homegrown project, though the company is also shepherding "The Grackle," a comedy McConaughey will topline for New Line next year. Thesp signed on to do that film for New Line as well as "Ghosts of Girlfriends Past," which Mark Waters just inked to direct.

Playtone just wrapped the Spike Jonze's "Where the Wild Things Are" and the Mike Nichols-directed "Charlie Wilson's War." Hanks and Goetzman are filming the HBO miniseries "John Adams" and prepping the Walden-financed "The Dark Ember" and a screen adaptation of the musical "Mamma Mia!"

Bindler directed the doc "Hands on a Hard Body."
