Wood won two Daytime Emmys as a writer on "All My Children" and had several WGA and Emmy noms.
Before moving into writing, Wood directed soaps including "One Life to Live," "The Best of Everything," "Brighter Day" and "Search for Tomorrow."
Born in Longview, Texas, he served in the Army in WWII and graduated the U. of Texas and Yale School of Drama. He started out directing network sports and news programs and moved into daytime drama in the 1950s as a director on CBS's "Guiding Light." Agnes Nixon, the creator of "All My Children" selected Wood to be the first director of that show when it premiered on ABC in 1970.
He is survived by his partner, James J. White.
