Tuesday's "The Number 23" preem gave industryites a double dose of downtown history and architecture.

Pic unspooled in the 1926 Orpheum's French Baroque auditorium with the after-party a few blocks away at the Edison, a recently opened eatery in the basement of a 1906 power plant.

The eye-popping setting offers an almost gothic-industrial ambiance (New Line's Russell Schwartz describe the decor as "Frankenstein's lair meets wine bar") with the power plant and original generators still in place.

As for "23," New Line's Bob Shaye, who'd returned from the Berlin film fest for the preem, said he "respected Jim Carrey's momentum to go beyond being a funny guy."

The topper said he was "not enthused" about the pic's development until Carrey and helmer Joel Schumacher signed on.

"The story in other hands didn't work," Shaye said. "Jim and Joel were the perfect combination."
