'Yellow' colors in cast

Hurt, Bello to star in 'Handkerchief'

William Hurt and Maria Bello will topline Arthur Cohn's remake of Japanese film "Yellow Handkerchief," with shooting starting in Louisiana on March 22.

Udayan Prasad ("My Son the Fanatic," "Brothers in Trouble") is directing, and Chris Menges is the cinematographer. Eddie Redmayne also stars.

Schochiku's original pic, adapted from Pete Hamill's novel "The Yellow Handkerchief of Happiness" was a major success in Japan and won six prizes at the Japanese Academy's first award show in 1978. Story's centered on a convict recently released from prison for an accidental murder who's considering returning to his ex-wife and his old life.

Cohn began pursuing the project four years ago.

Shochiku will distribute the new film in Japan. Cohn will wait until the film's completed before making a domestic distribution deal.
