Pixar's "Cars" grabbed the top prize Sunday night at the 34th annual Annie Awards, but DreamWorks and Aardman Features' "Flushed Away" walked away with the most hardware.
"Cars" scored animated feature and nabbed the music feature nod for Randy Newman. Picking up the "Cars" award helmer-scribe John Lasseter said, "I think it's been a banner year for animation."
Host Tom Kenny agreed, "Pixar did what Ford and GM couldn't do this year -- made money off of cars." Kenny also thanked those in the audience for attending, however ribbing them with not having enough clout to get into the Grammys, which were being held at the same time.
"Flushed Away" snared five trophies: animated effects, Scott Cegielski; feature character animation, Gabe Hordos; feature production design, Pierre-Olivier Vincent; feature voice acting, Ian McKellen; and feature writing, Dick Clement & Ian La Frenais, Chris Lloyd & Joe Keenan and Will Davis.
DreamWorks' trophy total hit eight as "Over the Hedge" captured feature character design, Nicolas Marlet; feature directing, Tim Johnson and Karey Kirkpatrick; and feature storyboarding, Gary Graham.
On the television front, "Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends" scored a trifecta for Cartoon Network Studios winning animated TV series; TV music, James L. Venable and Jennifer Kes Remington, "One False Movie" episode; and TV production design, Martin Ansolabehere, "Good Wilt Hunting" episode.
