Cruz's casting was confirmed by Kuranda's Katrina Bayonas, Cruz's European agent and manager, following widespread Spanish press reports Friday echoing a foxnews.com social column by Roger Friedman.
In it, he recounts Woody Allen's confirming that Cruz would star in the Spain-set film, speaking in English and Spanish, at the annual amfAR charity dinner on Wednesday.
Allen's Spanish shoot follows the U.K.-shot "Cassandra's Dream," now in post.
Just what role Cruz will play has yet to be determined.
Pic will certainly roll in Barcelona — Allen, who is revered in Spain, has said that one major attraction of the project is the chance to spend the summer there with his family.
Allen was quoted last summer as saying that the untitled film will star English-speaking thesps who play foreigners in the Spanish city and turn on a love entanglement.
But how that plays out —or if it still holds — has still to be seen: Allen has yet to finish writing the film's screenplay.
Pic will be produced by Barcelona-based Mediapro and Gravier Prods., the shingle of Allen's sister Letty Aronson, his long-time producer.
Cruz's Allen role is the second time this week that the Academy-nommed actress has been linked with one of the world's high-profile auteurs.
On Monday, Pedro Almodovar confirmed that she has a "central role" in his revenge drama "La piel que habito," which currently looks most likely to be the Spanish mellermaestro's next film.
