It was a very strong holiday season for one of America's biggest videogames publishers -- Burger King??
In its fourth quarter earnings report on Tuesday, the fast food chain disclosed that it sold an astounding 3.2 million copies of a trio of promotional games for the Xbox 360 that it offered in stores over the holiday season.
With each game selling about a million units each, that puts them among the top holiday sellers in the vidgame biz. Microsoft's "Gears of War," the season's biggest hit, sold just over 3 million units, or about as many as Burger King's trio.
One reason the games moved so fast was their remarkably low price: just $3.99 each. The $12.8 million in revenue they brought in were hardly a blip compared with sales of burgers, fries, and other fare that totaled $559 million.
In an introductory statement to the earnings announcement, however, Burger King CEO John Chidsey cited the videogame offering as a key driver of overall 4% sales growth and restaurant traffic.
Games were very simple, and all featured promotional characters like the Subservient Chicken and the Burger King.
Company hasn't said yet whether it plans to offer additional vidgames, though it's a virtual certainty it will do so and that other companies will follow.
