'Glory' days: The sequel

Bouchareb puts spotlight on Arabs in U.S.

After shedding light on World War II's unsung Arab heroes in his Oscar-nominated "Days of Glory," helmer Rachib Bouchareb intends to put the spotlight on Arabs in America.

Franco-Algerian helmer is also developing a sequel to "Days of Glory," recounting the experience of North African fighters post-World War II through to the end of the Algerian War, he said.

But in contrast with "Glory" and its follow-up, the American film will be in the vein of comedies such as "My Big Fat Greek Wedding," only set among America's North Africans.

Helmer whose film "Little Senegal," was set among New York's African population, is teaming with Gallic comedy star Jamel Debbouze to develop the project, via their respective French production shingles Tessalit and Kiss Films. Debbouze will star.

"There are 10 million Muslims living in America and what strikes me is how much they have in common with the 6 million Muslims in France," helmer said. "Post-9/11 these communities feel ill at ease, they experience a lot of discrimination."
