Kenny Griswold, the Park City ski mountain entrepreneur and founder of the eatery Harry O's, will finance the film and produce with Dave Phillips.
Scott Williams and Bo Eason are writing the script.
When Cappelletti won the award in 1973 as a Penn State tailback, few knew how much inspiration he drew from his 11-year-old sibling. Joey, sapped from chemotherapy treatments, drew strength from his big brother's gridiron accomplishments. Cappelletti dedicated the Heisman to his brother, who died three years later.
Williams wrote "The Express," the drama about college gridiron great Ernie Davis, which Gary Fleder will direct for Universal. Eason, a former safety for the Houston Oilers, is adapting his autobiographical play "Runt of the Litter" for a feature that Frank Darabont is producing and might direct at Castle Rock. Phillips is exec producer of "Evan Almighty."
