Olivier nominees announced

'Spamalot' tops list of contenders

In London's year of record tuner openings, Tony winner "Monty Python's Spamalot" topped the nominees list for the 2007 Laurence Olivier Awards with seven mentions, including best musical.

The Broadway-bound revival of Stephen Sondheim's "Sunday in the Park With George" scored six mentions for London's top theater honors, including Daniel Evans (actor in a musical), Jenna Russell (actress in a musical) and Sam Buntrock (director).

"Spamalot" goes up against fellow Broadway transfers "Avenue Q" and "Caroline, or Change" in the new-musical race, along with Trevor Nunn's reworked version of the Gershwins' "Porgy and Bess." "Sunday in the Park" will wrestle with "Cabaret," "Evita" and "The Sound of Music" for musical production.

Broadway box office champion "Wicked" was unexpectedly shut out of the musical and performance categories. Tuner did land a directing mention for Joe Mantello and does figure in all three design lists.

In the play stakes, Dominic Cooke's revival of Arthur Miller's "The Crucible" for the Royal Shakespeare Company and Tom Stoppard's latest, "Rock 'n' Roll," nabbed four nominations apiece.

Cooke's production faces stiff competition in the play-revival stakes, notably from Howard Davies' Broadway-bound "A Moon or the Misbegotten," which also received noms for Eve Best as actress and Colm Meaney for supporting role.

Actor race looks like the toughest fight, with a battle between Rufus Sewell for "Rock 'n' Roll," Iain Glen for "The Crucible," David Haig for "Donkey's Years" and both Michael Sheen and Frank Langella for "Frost/Nixon." That drama, also headed for a Broadway berth in spring, landed a play nom, a further feather in the cap for hot scribe Peter Morgan ("The Queen").

The 31st annual Laurence Olivier Awards will be presented Feb. 18 at the Grosvenor House Hotel.
