No, really.
Disney is working quickly to put together an "HSM" ice show with Feld Entertainment, the company behind other Disney on Ice offerings. Thomas Schumacher, producer of Disney Theatrical Prods., hopes the production will make it to almost every major market in the country next season.
Riding high on the phenomenal success of the Disney Channel telefilm, CD and DVD, "HSM" is already doing big biz as live entertainment.
The license for stock, amateur and professional productions of the legit adaptation is in high demand, with five professional regional productions -- the first of which opened Jan. 5 in Minneapolis (see review, page 34) -- joining the more than 1,000 schools that will have staged the tuner by the end of the 2006-07 season.
That "HSM" license, like the similarly popular one for the stage incarnation of "Beauty and the Beast," should keep a steady stream of money flowing into the Disney coffers for a long time to come.
But right now the real moneymaker is the touring concert version making its way through arenas in 40 cities. A recent stop in East Rutherford, N.J., drew more than 15,000.
Show, featuring the movie's songs and original cast members, ends in L.A. on Jan. 29. And later this year the cast, a couple with solo albums under their belt, will reunite for the sequel.
