Abdul joins 'Bratz' pack

Film set to begin shooting late next month

Paula Abdul has taken a role in "Bratz: The Movie" -- both behind and in front of the camera. The "American Idol" jurist will star in the live-action pic, based on the popular doll line, as well as consult on casting, music, dancing and fashion.

Helmer Sean McNamara is set to begin lensing late next month for an August release. Avi Arad, MGA Entertainment and Crystal Sky Prods. are producing for Lionsgate. Crystal Sky is financing.

Film's storyline will follow four teenage girls from diverse backgrounds who just want to be themselves, versus being the victims of high-school cliques.

Abdul, who said she was drawn to the pic's message, will take an exec producing credit. She'll play a key part in discovering talent for the film.
