Focus sets cast, start date for 'Bruges'

Film is directorial debut of McDonagh

Focus Features has locked cast and a February start date for "In Bruges," the feature directorial debut of Martin McDonagh.

Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson will star with Ralph Fiennes, Clemence Poesy and Jeremie Renier.

Focus controls worldwide rights and is financing production with Film4. Blueprint Pictures principals Graham Broadbent and Pete Czernin are producing. Film4's Tessa Ross is exec producing with Scion Films' Jeff Abberley and Julia Blackman.

Scripted by McDonagh, "In Bruges" is a darkly comic tale of a pair of hit men (Farrell and Gleeson) who hole up in Bruges after a difficult job in London. As they become entangled with locals, tourists and a film shoot, their views on life and death get skewed.

Pic will shoot in Bruges, Belgium.

The British-born McDonagh won two Olivier Awards and got four Tony nominations before making his film debut with the Oscar-winning short "Six Shooter," which was backed by Film4 and starred Gleeson.

"Martin has written a screenplay that is both killingly funny and dramatically affecting, and this fine troupe of actors will interact marvelously under his direction," said Focus CEO James Schamus.

Film4, the feature division of U.K.'s Channel 4 Television, is coming off the Kevin Macdonald-directed "The Last King of Scotland" and the Roger Michell-directed "Venus."

Farrell recently wrapped "Cassandra's Dream" for Woody Allen, and next will be seen opposite Edward Norton in "Pride and Glory." Gleeson and Fiennes both just wrapped "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix."
