'Tonight' adds Bateman

Thesp cast opposite Smith in Columbia pic

Jason Bateman has been cast opposite Will Smith in the long-gestating superhero drama "Tonight, He Comes." Charlize Theron remains in talks with Columbia Pictures to also star.

Helmer Peter Berg is to lense this spring for a 2008 release. Pic is being produced by Akiva Goldsman, Michael Mann, James Lassiter and Smith.

Storyline revolves around a hard-living, middle-aged superhero (Smith) facing an existential crisis and a disillusioned fan base. Bateman plays a public relations exec who revamps the superhero's image after being saved -- even as the superhero woos the exec's wife.

Project has been in development for a decade, with Vincent Ngo penning the original script. Ngo's quirky take was ultimately refashioned by scribe Vince Gilligan.

Berg, who boarded the project in October, is the third director attached to the pic. Jonathan Mostow and Gabriele Muccino each ankled over creative differences.

"Tonight" will reunite Berg and Bateman: Berg ("Friday Night Lights") directs Bateman in "The Kingdom," starring Jamie Foxx, Jennifer Garner and Chris Cooper. U bows the pic in April.

More immediately, Bateman and Berg both appear in Joe Carnahan's "Smokin' Aces," which opens Jan. 26. Jeremy Pivens and Ben Affleck topline.

Later this year, Bateman also will be seen in "Fast Track" and "Mr. Magorium's Emporium."
