Vet producer dies at 69

Mitchell produced 'Falcon Crest,' 'Doogie Howser,' 'Alien Nation'

Ron Mitchell, veteran film and television producer and production manager, died Dec. 27 in Depoe Bay, Ore. after a two-year battle with lymphoma. He was 69.

Mitchell started as a stage and film actor and turned to the production side in the 70s, production managing low-budget features.

In the 80's he moved into television with "Falcon Crest" and "Doogie Howser, M.D." followed by "My So Called Life" and "Alien Nation."

In the late 90s he moved to Oregon and began producing there with "Halloweentown" for the Disney Channel and "Smarthouse" also for Disney, the original "C.S.I." and later "Plainsong" for Hallmark Hall of Fame.

He was active in the Oregon film community, helping to bring shows to Oregon and was twice appointed by the Governor as a member of the Oregon Film Board overseeing the Oregon Film & Video Office and aiding the passage of incentive legislation Greenlight Oregon helping lure production back to the state.

He is survived by his partner of 44 years, makeup artist Leigh Mitchell.
