Higgins signs on at Sobini

Film company hired new president of production

Mark Amin's Sobini Films has hired David W. Higgins as president of production to oversee all creative aspects of its operations.

Sobini, which has a first-look deal with Lionsgate, also has signed Higgins' Launchpad Prods. to a first-look deal. Former Irish Dreamtime exec Angelique Higgins is president of Launchpad.

Sobini's upcoming projects include "To the Bone," due to start production early this year with James Marsh ("The King") attached to direct.

Story centers on a man who sets out on a lone hunting expedition in winter, suffers a severe leg injury and is rescued by a mysterious trapper whose intentions turn out to be sinister.

Sobini also is packaging "Eliza Graves," with Oscar winner Mike Van Diem ("Karakter") attached to direct the pic, set for production in the spring. Joe Gangemi is adapting from Edgar Allen Poe's short story, in which a young doctor arrives at an island sanitarium but soon discovers the inmates have taken over the asylum.

Other projects include "Sanctuary," based on the John Connelly novel and adapted by Stephen Susco; "Blackwell's Island," a thriller based on the true story of an investigative journalist who becomes trapped in a women's asylum; and "Speechless," a comedy about a shy man who achieves success after letting someone else control his body.

Launchpad produced "Hard Candy," starring Patrick Wilson and Ellen Page, and is in post-production on indie drama "Disfigured," written and directed by Glenn Gers. Higgins also co-produced both "Big Momma's House" pics.
