The number of people in China using the Internet has risen 30% in the last year, with 132 million now logging on. That number is 9 million more than a year ago and ranks second in the world, next to the United States.
The huge rise has greatly increased online commerce in the communist country. The government encourages the Web for business purposes but strictly forbids use of the Internet for anything that it deems as subversive, such as pornography or political writings.
