ROME -- A two-day strike by Italo radio and TV journalists that started Monday went largely unnoticed by locals.
Leading off pubcaster Rai Uno's 8 p.m. TV TG1 newscast on Monday, the newsreader read from a prepared statement explaining the nation's TV and radio reporters would continue with their work stoppage until Wednesday.
The reporter then launched into a seven-minute rundown of the day's news, leading with former prime minister and medial mogul Silvio Berlusconi's successful heart surgery.
The broadcast journalists are negotiating for more pay; their contract ends Jan. 31.
There have been a string of newspaper strikes this year as print journalists continue to work under a disputed contract.
As was the case with previous journalist strikes, Italians shifted to other media -- mainly the Internet and newspapers -- but some radio stations carried news updates and Rai's TG1 said it will air again Tuesday night.
