Dragons bow to monsters in 'Host'

Film also earned supporting actor, new actress

SEOUL -- Helmer Bong Joon-ho's record-breaking monster movie "The Host" picked up five awards, including picture, at the 27th Blue Dragon Awards, held in Seoul on Friday night.

Pic also snagged supporting actor (Byun Hee-bong), new actress (Ko Ah-sung), lighting and technical achievement.

Top thesp awards went to duo Park Joong-hoon and Ahn Sung-ki, who shared actor for their work in "Radio Star"; and actress Kim Hye-soo for her role in "Tazza: The High Rollers."

Toronto selection "Family Ties" picked up a director award for Kim Tae-yong and a supporting actress for Jeong Yu-mi, while coming-of-age pic "Like a Virgin" -- slated for Berlin's Kinder Generation-Plus section -- took home new actor (Ryu Deok-hwan), screenplay and new director (Lee Hae-young and Lee Hae-jun).

Other awards include cinematography to "Tazza" (Choi Young-hwan) and art direction to period film "Forbidden Quest."

Meanwhile, "King and the Clown," South Korea's submission for foreign language Oscar, settled for a single award to Lee Byeong-woo for music.

The Blue Dragon Awards, presented by the Chosun Sports newspaper, vies with the Grand Bell Awards held in late spring for the title of South Korea's leading awards ceremony.
