The Hollywood Foreign Press Assn.'s studio tally placed Paramount in the lead with 15 noms, followed by Warner Bros. with 13.
But such figures are a headache-inducing anachronism in a world of co-productions, split rights and conglom ownership.
For example, the three nominations for "Letters From Iwo Jima" and "Flags of Our Fathers" are counted three times: For Paramount, DreamWorks and Warner Bros.
WB is distribbing "Flags" and "Letters" internationally, and "Letters" domestically. Par distribs "Flags" domestically.
DreamWorks' eight noms include five for "Dreamgirls," which Par is distribbing, two for "Letters" and one for "Flags." Both "Letters" and "Flags" are listed in the official announcement as co-productions between Warner and DreamWorks.
And congloms blur the field. Fox Filmed Entertainment includes both Fox and Fox Searchlight, so there is a logic to combine those numbers, though the HFPA counts them separately.
In contrast, the seven for "Babel" (distribbed by Par Vantage) are put separately under Vantage and included in the Par tally.
And MGM's getting credit for four noms -- three from distribbing Weinstein Co.'s "Bobby" and "Miss Potter."
