'Pirates' sales sail up

DVD debut tops 'Harry Potter' sales

'Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest'

Disney's "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" reaped a bounty at video stores its first week, outpacing all other bows for the year with 10.5 million units sold.

Disney's "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" reaped a bounty at videostores its first week, outpacing all other bows for the year with 10.5 million units sold.

The debut easily topped that of the year's previous record holder, "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire," which sold nearly 9 million discs the week of its March bow, but falls slightly short of the 11 million units of the original "Pirates" sold in its first week on shelves in December 2003.

(The original "Pirates" has now sold 18 million units overall, with 16 million units of those on DVD.)

Nevertheless, the "Pirates" sequel is expected to be the year's top seller. "Dead Man's Chest" has earned more than $1 billion at the worldwide B.O. and is the year's biggest film.

Mouse House said the DVD also got off to a strong start in international markets. According to Disney, nearly 1.5 million copies were sold in the U.K. for, it says, the highest-ever tally there, and nearly 1 million units in Japan, where "Dead Man's Chest" has become the top live-action title ever.

Enthusing about the bow, Bob Chapek, prexy of Buena Vista Worldwide Home Entertainment, said it "further illustrates the worldwide phenomenon of everything 'Pirates of the Caribbean.' "

The "Pirates" bow follows Disney's boffo debut of "Cars" last month. The Pixar toon sold about 9.5 million units in its first week in stores.
