The Green Lantern, who used his ring to fight crime, was originated by Nodell in 1940 in a comic that featured other characters as well. Soon after, the Green Lantern had his own comicbook series until it was canceled in 1947.
The character was re-booted in 1959, and has since been revived multiple times in several different incarnations.
Philadelphia-born Nodell drew the comic under the name Mart Dellon, and then left the industry. He would go on to a career in advertising and was part of an ad team that created the Pillsbury Doughboy in the 1960s.
Nodell got the idea for Green Lantern after waiting for a subway in New York and seeing a train operator waving a green light.
He is survived by two sons, six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
