Project is described as a "Dazed and Confused"-style ensemble piece in which paranoia overruns a suburban town in 1986 when a thumbtack is found in a candy bar. The town declares war on Halloween in an effort to "protect" the children.
"Enough of the slasher flicks," said National Lampoon's editor-in-chief Scott Rubin. "The real horror of Halloween lies in the absurdity of what we all go through."
National Lampoon, publisher of the iconic but defunct National Lampoon magazine, recently announced its launch into inhouse feature production as a means of pumping up its 36-year-old brand. National Lampoon has been involved in more than two dozen comedies, beginning with 1978's "Animal House" -- typically through licensing deals -- and remains active in television programming, interactive entertainment, homevideo, audio CDs and publishing.
Half Shell recently signed a co-development deal with the company to produce four pics based on National Lampoon properties. "The Last Night in October" is the first of these projects.
In the past, National Lampoon has lent out its name but has not participated in the development or production of films.
National Lampoon also is partnering with the Farrelly brothers via their Conundrum Entertainment shingle on "National Lampoon's Bag Boy," about an underdog teen who discovers he has the talent to excel in the world of competitive grocery bagging.
