'Death Note' generated spinoff

World Brief

The two "Death Note" pics, which have together grossed nearly ¥7 billion ($60 million) in Japan, have generated a spinoff featuring the pics' eccentric detective, according to local press reports.

The first "Death Note" pic, distribbed by Warners Japan, earned $24.6 million following its June release. The second, which bowed in November and concludes the story, has passed the $34.5 million mark. Meanwhile, the comic on which the pics are based has sold 23 million copies in paperback editions.

The as-yet-untitled spinoff will go before the cameras sometime next year, with the NTV web again producing.
