Label Morgan Spurlock Presents has bought Independent Spirit nominee "Chalk" and tsunami doc "The Third Wave" with plans to release them theatrically next year. It also has picked up education-themed doc "Class Act" for homevid.
Acquisitions bring to five the number of movies on the label, which earlier had picked up "The Future of Food," an expose of genetically engineered food, and consumerist critique "Czech Dreams."
"Chalk" is a mockumentary of sorts about newbie teachers in the public-school system that has been compared to "The Office." It won the jury award at the L.A. Film Festival and on Tuesday was nommed for the John Cassavetes prize at the Independent Spirit kudos.
"The Third Wave" follows several idealists who traveled on their own to Southeast Asia after the 2004 tsunami to help rebuild a village.
Hart Sharp Video, which operates distinctly from the Hart Sharp Entertainment shingle, typically focuses on homevid distribution. But company's Joe Amodei said it will look to release "Chalk" and "Wave" through theatrical partners, possibly putting up P&A money itself if it doesn't find a suitable partner.
Move continues a relationship between the "Super Size Me" director and Hart Sharp Video, which released Spurlock's breakout doc on homevid. Spurlock said the plan is for as many as six to eight movies per year on Morgan Spurlock Presents.
It's possible he may finance a pic. "If the stars align and everything keeps moving in that direction, I think I will direct a movie for (the label)," he added.
Helmer said that while he's known for documentaries, Morgan Spurlock Presents will encompass a range of socially relevant categories.
Spurlock also serves as exec producer on "Class Act," and his Warrior Poets shingle provided finishing funds.
Helmer is developing doc "The Republican War on Science" through Warrior Poets and also has had a hit with the role-reversal series "30 Days," which has run for two seasons on FX.
