Though not quite in the top echelon of franchises like "Madden NFL" or "Grand Theft Auto," 1 million units in just over a month is a solid success in the vidgame biz, particularly for one based on a film more than 20 years old. Only other game adaptation of a Hollywood property to boast such strong sales out of the gate this year has been LucasArts' "Lego Star Wars II."
Competition is much fiercer this month, however, as many companies launched their top titles for the holidays. Microsoft sold more than 1 million units of "Gears of War," its heavily promoted new franchise for the Xbox 360, in just two weeks.
Nintendo premiered its Wii console two weeks ago and has already sold more than 600,000 units in North America, virtually selling out the vidgame giant's initial shipments. Company has also sold more than 450,000 units of "The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess" for Wii, meaning that about three-quarters of those who bought the console also purchased the newest installment of the "Zelda" franchise.
Sony is believed to have sold out its initial shipment of the new PlayStation 3 console, though the company isn't confirming how many that is. Reports have pegged the initial shipment of PS3s at less than 250,000 due to production problems.
Nintendo is aiming to ship 4 million Wii consoles around the world by the end of the year, while Sony has a more modest goal of 2 million PS3s in North America and Japan.
