Core aboard 'Conrail'

Helmer-scribe nabs ride on New Line biopic

New Line Cinema has hired Ericson Core ("Invincible") to direct "Conrail," produced by Beau Flynn and Tripp Vinson's Contrafilm.

Mini-major's been developing the project since obtaining life rights two years ago to the story of Eddie Mongon, who spent a decade as a modern-day Robin Hood.

Mongon was the ringleader of the Conrail Boyz gang, which robbed trains using a combination of high-tech equipment and street smarts, and then shared the proceeds with the poor of Hoboken, N.J. Mongon was arrested in 2004.

Core will supervise a rewrite of Chris Murphey's script. He's attached to direct Touchstone action thriller "Liberty" for producer Sean Bailey along with a biopic of Stylianos Kyriakides, who won the 1946 Boston Marathon after escaping execution during the Nazi occupation of Greece, for "Invincible" producers Gordon Gray and Mark Ciardi.

Flynn and Vinson produced "The Guardian" and "The Number 23," starring Jim Carrey and set for release Feb. 23 via New Line. Shingle's also developing an untitled prison riot project with Rob Cohen directing.

Core is repped by Gersh.
