Meanwhile, there was no word Thursday from the CW on the fates of "Veronica Mars" and "One Tree Hill." Net was contractually required to decide whether to order the back nine segs of both skeins by Thursday, but as of 6 p.m. PT, there was no news from the net.
As for Fox, net has given the go-ahead to nine more episodes of Brad Garrett laffer "Death" and six more segs of procedural drama "Standoff." Skeins are the first -- and likely only -- Fox frosh to be extended beyond their initial 13-seg commitments.
Also, just a few days after announcing that "Vanished" would be off the air for two weeks -- but definitely return in December -- Fox Thursday confirmed the crime sudser wouldn't be returning to the network after all.
Instead, Fox will play off the remaining four episodes of the show via its various Web properties. New segs will bow Fridays, the same day NBC is premiering episodes of its similarly themed "Kidnapped."
Until now, Fox had declined to say that "Vanished" was canceled. Net's press release, however, calls the remaining segs of the show "the final four episodes" and labels the last seg the "series finale."
Fox will fill the "Vanished" 8 p.m. timeslot with episodes of another failed frosh skein, "Justice."
"Death," from Sony Pictures Television, has struggled against tough competish Thursdays at 8 p.m. Fox execs believe the show might yet attract an audience and are hoping the return of "American Idol" and "24" will give it a boost.
"Standoff," from 20th Century Fox TV, has also posted underwhelming Nielsen numbers. Still, skein has shown more of a pulse than Fox's other frosh dramas, "Vanished" and "Justice."
Fox opted to order six episodes of "Standoff" rather than the usual nine because, with "Idol" and "24," net believes it won't have a need for more segs, a spokesman said.
Peter Liguori, Fox Entertainment prexy, was unavailable for comment.
