Pic will shoot for 50 weeks and is skedded to bow in early 2008.
Pic showcases the life cycle of flamingos in one of the world's last and most hostile wilderness areas, Lake Natron in Northern Tanzania. The film charts the journey of the flamingo from "ugly duckling" chick to magnificent, crimson-winged "firebird" whose mysterious migrations coincide with life-bringing rain.
Matthew Aeberhard, who founded Natural Light Films in 2001, is helming with his directing partner, Leander Ward.
Paul Webster ("Pride & Prejudice," "Atonement"), who co-founded Kudos Pictures with Stephen Garret, is exec producing.
Aeberhard said he wants the film "to target a younger, hipper audience than wildlife films generally attract, and provoke a more visceral reaction."
Spearheading Disney's involvement in the film is Jean Francois Camilleri, general manager of Buena Vista Intl., France. Camilleri also was responsible for the company's participation in "March of the Penguins."
