Horror pair teaming for Spanish pic

Balaguero, Plaza join for 'REC'

Two of Spain's horror film specialists, Jaume Balaguero ("Darkness," "Fragile") and Paco Plaza ("Romasanta," "Second Name") have re-teamed to co-direct experimental thriller "REC."

Produced by Julio Fernandez, prexy of Barcelona-based mini-major Filmax Entertainment, the Spanish-language shoot kicked off last week in Catalonia with unknown actors.

The E1.5 million ($1.9 million) horror feature will be ready for delivery next summer. Filmax Intl. will offer it at the American Film Market.

"REC" turns on a young TV reporter and her cameraman who cover the night shift at the local fire station.

Receiving a call from an old lady trapped in her house, they reach her building to hear horrifying screams -- which begin a long nightmare and a uniquely dramatic TV report.

Balaguero and Plaza co-helmed 2002 docu "OT, The Movie," about TV contest "Operacion Triunfo's" first season tour.

Balaguero's "Darkness," also produced by Filmax, was released by Stateside last year by Dimension, grossing $22.2 million.

His latest pic, "Fragile," starring Calista Flockhart, was acquired by Bauer Martinez Distribution for a still-to-be-specified U.S. theatrical release on more than 1,000 screens.

According to Filmax, "REC" may slightly delay production on "The Certain Lady," Balaguero's next solo feature, based on Jose Carlos Somoza's novel "La Dama numero trece," which is skedded to shoot next year.
