Magnolia hi-def design

'Architect' to be released in multiple formats

Mark Cuban and Todd Wagner have designs on even more formats for their day-and-date strategy: In early December, they will simultaneously release "The Architect" on both hi-def DVD formats in addition to standard DVD, theaters and hi-def cable.

The partners' Magnolia Home Entertainment division will release the pic, starring Anthony LaPaglia, Viola Davis and Isabella Rossellini, Dec. 5 on Blu-ray and HD DVD, as well as standard DVD. The discs will come with commentary by tyro helmer Matt Tauber, outtakes and a making of featurette. Both hi-def versions will be priced $34.98, compared to the $29.98 price for standard DVD.

The pic, about an idealistic architect who discovers one of his projects for lower-income families may be unsound, is an adaptation of a play by David Grieg. It will open in theaters the weekend before its homevid release.

Cuban and Wagner began their push into day-and-date releases on multi-platforms in January with "Bubble." The partners co-own Magnolia Pictures, Landmark Theaters and HD Net cable channels in addition to their homevid label.
