"Perhaps Love" earned 12 noms, including picture, director and actress for Zhou Xun, who is considered the front-runner in the category.
"After This Our Exile" follows with seven mentions, including picture, original screenplay and actor (Kwok Fu Shing). Drama marks Patrick Tam's return to the director's chair after a 17-year break.
Helmer Su Chao-pin's Cannes player "Silk," billed as the most expensive Taiwan pic ever made, gives the home team something to root for with five noms, including picture, director and screenplay.
Many see the ghost story, with its emphasis on Hollywood-style visual effects, as the future of Taiwan filmmaking. Perhaps tellingly, pic's pan-Asian cast was snubbed.
This year's dark horse is mainland Chinese helmer Ning Hao's "Crazy Stone," a heist comedy that nabbed four noms: picture, director, original screenplay and editing.
No Golden Horse would be complete without a Hong Kong crime drama in the mix. This year, it's Johnnie To's "Exiled" with four noms, including pic and director.
One of the year's most hyped Chinese-language productions, Feng Xiaogang's "The Banquet," was shut out of all the major categories, settling for five noms in technical fields.
