Also Thursday, CBS gave frosh drama "Jericho" a full-season order.
"The Beast," from CBS Paramount Network TV and FremantleMedia, centers on a young veterinarian who takes over his late father's practice -- even though he hates animals. Simon Nye created and wrote the workplace comedy in the U.K.
Here in the States, Cawley will write and exec produce "The Beast," which scored a put pilot order from Fox.
Cawley won an Emmy in 2003 for writing the "Raymond" episode "Baggage." He rose to exec producer on "Raymond" during the show's run. More recently, he worked on "Out of Practice" and last season developed the CBS pilot "Play Nice."
On the back-nine beat, "Jericho" becomes the first new Eye series to earn a full-season vote. The show has turned into a sleeper hit for CBS, averaging 11.3 million viewers and a 3.4 rating/10 share among adults 18-49 so far this season.
As a result, "Jericho" has helped CBS improve its Wednesday 8 p.m. timeslot by 48% in adults 18-49.
"Jericho" revolves around the impact of a nearby nuclear explosion on a small Kansas town. Skeet Ulrich, Gerald McRaney, Ashley Scott and Pamela Reed star.
CBS Paramount Network TV is behind the show exec produced by Jon Turtletaub, Stephen Chbosky and Carol Barbee.
