Nets calling for backup

'Medium' to fill in for 'Kidnapped'

The nets are calling in the reserves.

NBC is expected to tap spooky drama "Medium" to fill the 10 p.m. Wednesday slot vacated by "Kidnapped," insiders said. Nothing's official yet, but "Medium" is likely to return in mid-November.

"Dateline NBC" is currently airing at 10 p.m. Wednesdays.

Meanwhile, CBS has decided to bow new medical drama "3 Lbs." on Tuesday, Nov. 14 at 10 p.m., replacing the now-canceled "Smith" (Daily Variety, Oct. 5).

Stanley Tucci toplines "3 Lbs.," which comes from exec producer Peter Ocko ("Boston Legal").

Both "Medium" and "3 Lbs." are from CBS Paramount Network Television.

Separately, CBS is giving an extra vote of confidence to sophomore drama "The Unit."

Just days after ordering a full season of the show, the Eye has tacked on an extra episode to its order. That means studio 20th Century Fox will produce 23 episodes of the military-themed actioner.
