Ryan Murphy will adapt and direct, with Plan B's Brad Pitt and Dede Gardner producing.
Gilbert had a husband, a big apartment and a weekend home and was trying to get pregnant, until she realized that wasn't the life she wanted. After a painful divorce, she set off on a journey of self-discovery around the world.
"Nip/Tuck" creator Murphy just teamed with Plan B on his feature directing debut, "Running With Scissors," and set up a series titled "4 oz." with Pitt and Gardner at FX.
Pitt and Gardner also are producing Murphy's likely next feature, "Dirty Tricks," a drama set up at Paramount Vantage with Meryl Streep attached to play Watergate figure Martha Mitchell.
Murphy's hope is to get "Eat, Pray, Love" written and ready so he can make it quickly after wrapping "Dirty Tricks." It's a large-scale epic that covers four countries, and the author has rebuffed numerous overtures from actresses since the book was published.
Gilbert sparked to a package spearheaded by Roberts, who next stars alongside Tom Hanks and Philip Seymour Hoffman in the Mike Nichols-directed "Charlie Wilson's War" for Universal and Playtone.
