'Mermaid' does swimmingly

4 mil DVDs sold in North America in debut week

Buena Vista Worldwide Home Entertainment said consumers bought 4 million copies of its two-disc platinum edition of "The Little Mermaid" in North America during its first week in stores.

The animated classic also debuted as a download on iTunes the same day, and was No. 2 on the service within a week, which the studio is calling evidence that physical and digital distribution can live happily side by side.

"It presents strong evidence that DVD and the digital space can coexist in a healthy and dynamic environment ... and that is good for the industry overall," BVWHE president Bob Chapek said.

Disney released the two-disc platinum edition Oct. 3 after a seven-year moratorium on the title.

The double-disc DVD includes new bonus features such as "Under the Sea Adventure: A Virtual Ride," "Kiss the Girl" musicvideo performed by "High School Musical" star Ashley Tisdale, making-of featurettes, deleted scenes and short film "The Little Match Girl."
