Fiennes tunes 'Vivaldi'

Thesp in tune to composer biopic

This article was updated on Oct. 11, 2006.

Joseph Fiennes will portray the eccentric priest and Baroque composer Antonio Vivaldi in a biopic to be directed by Boris Damast from a script by journalist Steven Freedman.

Damast will produce "Vivaldi" through his indie company Mechaniks. Andrea Kikot is co-producing.

Lena Headey also joins the biopic's cast, which includes Malcolm McDowell and Zuleikha Robinson.

Freedman has spent more than two decades researching Vivaldi, whose most famous composition is "The Four Seasons." Biopic follows the composer as a young priest assigned to serve as music master of a school for the abandoned, illegitimate daughters of Venice's courtesans. He bonds with the girls, which leads to his landing a concert of his music before the pope.

Fiennes is currently in theaters with "Running With Scissors." He stars in the upcoming South African drama "Goodbye Bafana" and "The Red Baron."

Damast has directed primarily for television, including episodes of "The Invisible Man" and "The Tick."

Another Vivaldi project is in development at Imagine Entertainment and Columbia.
