Ray Lawrence's "Jindabyne" and Neil Armfield's "Candy" topped the critics org's noms list with eight each, including mentions for film, director and adapted screenplay.
Junkie drama "Candy" scooped acting categories with nominations for Ledger and his co-star Abbie Cornish; Geoffrey Rush and Noni Hazlehurst received noms in supporting categories.
"Jindabyne" collected noms for Linney and supporting thesps John Howard and Deborra-Lee Furness.
Rolf de Heer's aboriginal-language drama "Ten Canoes" and "Kenny," a pic about a portable potty company manager, also garnered best film mentions.
Awards will be held Oct. 28 in Melbourne, ahead of the preeminent Australian Film Institute Awards and the Independent Film Awards in November.
