Muller heads to Beirut

Venice topper helped save Lebanese fest

ROME — Venice Film Fest topper Marco Muller is among international industryites headed for the Beirut Film Fest, which kicks off today (Oct. 4).

Muller, whose backing to Beirut has been instrumental to its being able to hold the current edition — after being on hiatus for two years due to political turbulence — will be traveling to Lebanon with Italo helmer Emanuele Crialese who brings to Beirut his Ellis-Island immigration drama "Golden Door," winner of a Lido Silver Lion.

Another Venice pic, Gallic helmer Santiago Amigorena's 9/11-themed "A Few Days in September," is also headed for Beirut, with the helmer and star Juliette Binoche in tow.

Beirut fest director Colette Naufal has acknowledged Muller's support, which prompted him to push ahead despite recent Israeli bombings and find coin from the U.S.-based Lee and Gund Foundation, allowing him to hold the seventh edition shortly after the ceasefire.

Fest runs Oct. 4-11.
