Indian starlet sentenced to prison

MUMBAI -- Bollywood starlet Monica Bedi has been has been sentenced to five years in jail and fined about $100 by a Hyderabad court for obtaining an Indian passport using a fictitious name and address five years ago.

Bedi had appeared in some 10 Bollywood films but has been on the run for 10 years with underworld don Abu Salem, with who she was romantically linked. Both were extradited from Portugal last year.

Salem, who is being investigated for his role in the 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts that killed more than 250 people and injured more than 700, is also suspected of extorting money from personalities and providing thesp Sunjay Dutt with illegal weapons in 1992-93.

Bedi is expected to appeal.
