Scribe joining 20th tribe

Newman inks for 2-year deal

Twentieth Century Fox TV is feeling groovy about "That '70s Show" scribe Kristin Newman, inking her to a two-year, seven-figure overall deal.

Newman will create and develop original programming for the studio. She's also joined the staff of 20th's "How I Met Your Mother," where she's a co-exec producer.

Gary Newman, prexy of 20th, said the scribe (who, despite sharing his surname, is no relation) has been on the studio's radar for quite some time. Once "That '70s Show" ended last spring, 20th began pursuing a deal with her.

"She has a reputation for having a pretty raunchy sensibility, which we think is a good thing to have," Newman told Daily Variety. "She also has an ability to write from both a boy's and a girl's point of view, and that's something that makes her particularly well suited to a show like 'How I Met Your Mother.' "

Newman likely will focus exclusively on "Mother" this season before turning to development next year.

She began her career in 2000 as a scribe on "That '70s Show," working her way up to supervising producer.

Deal was brokered by UTA.
